China's construction waste production is amazing

In recent years, the total annual emission of construction waste in China is about 1.55 billion tons - 2.4 billion tons, accounting for about 40% of urban waste, causing a serious ecological crisis. For a long time, due to the lack of unified and perfect management methods for construction waste and the lack of scientific, effective and economically feasible disposal technologies, the vast majority of construction waste has been transported to the suburbs without any treatment and piled up in the open or simply landfilled, and the stock of construction waste has reached more than 20 billion tons. In 2017, China produced about 2.379 billion tons of construction waste, but only 11.9 million tons of it was used for resource utilization. By 2021 construction waste will reach 2.8 billion tons. In the event of a serious earthquake disaster, the amount of waste generated will be even greater, with only the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake generating 300 million tons of waste at a time.

Low utilization rate of construction waste resource utilization

According to estimates, China generates more than 3.5 billion tons of construction waste each year, and China already has a stockpile of more than 20 billion tons of construction waste. In the past 50 years, China has produced at least 30 billion cubic meters of clay bricks, which will be transformed into construction waste in the future. The way to deal with these "by-products" that come with development is, of course, to go the way of resourcefulness. But unfortunately, China's construction waste resource rate is less than 5%, compared to Germany, South Korea and other countries more than 90% resource utilization rate, it is really embarrassing.

There are three main sources of construction waste: generated by the demolition of old buildings, generated by the construction of new buildings and generated by building renovation. From the distribution of the composition of construction waste in China in 2017, construction waste generated by the demolition of old buildings accounted for 58% of construction waste, and construction waste generated by the construction of new buildings accounted for 36%. This shows that the demolition phase of buildings and the construction phase of new buildings are the key points of construction waste control.

Resourcefulness targets force rapid market release

From the 35 cities (districts) that carry out pilot construction waste management statistics, the amount of construction waste generated in the pilot areas in 2019 is 1.37 billion tons, and it is projected that the total amount of construction waste in 2019 is not less than 3.5 billion tons. The pilot cities have set up resource facilities through the layout and mode of "temporary + permanent" and "on-site + fixed", and the total number of resource projects built is 445, with a total processing capacity of 312 million tons/year, and the resource utilization rate has reached 22%.

The recycling value of construction waste is huge, and recycled construction waste aggregates can be used in different fields instead of natural aggregates as engineering construction materials, such as recycled concrete, mortar, blocks, bricks and plates for construction projects; recycled permeable concrete, permeable bricks, inorganic mixes, graded aggregates and backfill materials for municipal transportation projects; recycled aggregates as permeable storage materials for sponge city construction fields; and recycled concrete products for underground pipe corridors, etc. The application works reach tens of millions of square meters for up to 15 years, with reliable engineering quality.

With the production and application practice of recycled products gradually deepening, more and more product application technology tends to mature, and a total of 16 national and industry standards have been issued to provide technical support for engineering applications.

In addition to national or industry standards, regions with better promotion of construction waste resourcization are also actively developing local standards. At the same time, several provinces and cities in China have also given some support to the consumption of resource-based products from the policy level. Beijing, for example, requires municipal construction projects such as municipalities, transportation, landscaping and waterworks to use no less than 10% of the construction waste recycled products selected for replacement in designated project parts. It can be foreseen that the east wind of the construction waste disposal industry has arrived, and under the pressure of the resourcefulness index of the provinces and municipalities, the construction waste disposal market will usher in an explosive period! Industry speculation, by 2030, China's construction waste can bring the output value will exceed 330 billion yuan.
